Men’s Fashion : Bags For Winter 2011
06 Dec 2011
Making its presence felt quite brazenly on the catwalks of the world this season is the bag. It has become an item without which an ensemble is neither complete or in vogue. The man bag is, in most instances, large and boldly masculine in appearance. Just as with women’s bags, functionality underlies its rise to high fashion but has also become a clear statement of being in vogue. Following on the successes of the scholastic look of the 2010 season, designers have opted to make only slight shifts in size and in details to the best-selling tote and shoulder bags. Travel bags play a key role in fall and winter attire and, of course, they become a necessity for the holiday season when everyone spends a few days away. Shoes and bag should complement each other. The messenger bag is very much the style for this fall and winter. A structured messenger bag in leather enhances a formal look while the more casual and unstructured type in a canvas fabric enhances leisurewear. The elegant tote bag, too, has a dual look. A stylish, smart tote in a good hide with refined trimmings adds volumes to a business wardrobe. While the square look is essential for the formal man about town, the more casual variation comes both in the square and in a barrel shape. It is smaller than the rough and ready gym kit and offers a more relaxed option for men who do not need to carry a briefcase, and is a perfect accessory for a nonchalant ensemble for after business hours. The informal version comes in enticing designer colors. Style and grace is all important when selecting a man bag. This is not a basic container bought to throw in a towel and trainers for the gym. A travel bag makes a statement about a man who is trendy and cares about the overall look at all times. Tow-toned travel bags are sublimely stylish while the rich deep colors add vibrancy to an ensemble when traveling. Nights call for something more subtle than the large masculine designs for daytime. The tidy clutch or large wallet is just the thing. Do not use an old clutch because the styles and fabrics are not the same each season. A favorite is the clutch in shiny new or well-worn Italian leather. Generally the darker hues are favored, especially a midnight blue or a shade of ruby. However, the approach in London is much more daring and bold checks and busy patterns have made their way into the trendy nightspots. The vintage leather look, neutral or very dark colors such as navy blue or burgundy red are in mode. Two-tone is a favorite of some of the top designers. Detail, such as pockets and zippers on the bag, is important. Gold clasps remain a sign of good taste although antique brass hardware adds a fashionable touch to this season’s designs while zippers remain on the hip list and straps, in matching and contrasting hues, are really in style. A brightly colored and glossy lining is an indispensable feature. Bags have been on the male fashion scene for many years but in the past couple of seasons, they have become a hot item and there does not seem to be a major designer who has not presented a superb collection for the fall and winter season.
