In this great big world we live in, there are leaders and there are followers. Leaders guide others in order to accomplish some task or goal. This most often appears in the work setting, as managers are put in place to help keep employees on track and to help hone their skills in order to maximize work output. Managers utilize various methods to motivate and lead a team to succeed at their jobs. These methods are known as management styles, and here is a look at the main types. One type is known as the autocratic style. A manager who operates in this manner often makes decisions on his or her own without seeking much input from others. His or her decisions are unilateral, and his or her word is the final say. Subordinates are not asked what they think and are expected to trust in what the manager has decided. A person who opts for the autocratic management style must be strong, but must also know how to pull it off without causing resentment and dissent amongst the ranks. A less rigid style is known as paternalistic. Though this type of management does not necessarily invite input from subordinates, it does take their best interests into account as well as the business’s. Communication and decisions still come from the top down, but a paternalistic manager will understand the importance of the workers’ morale and the social needs of the workforce. This style is more apt to encourage worker loyalty and a general sense of concern for the worker. Another main type of management style is democratic. In this style, everyone on the staff is encouraged to provide input and opinions. This means all members of the team from administrators to subordinates. Since all suggestions are welcome, democratic styles are beneficial especially in situations in which new products and technologies are at work. A manager may not be as familiar with the technology and will therefore rely on those working for him or her for education. Morale is also increased when everyone feels as though what they bring to the table is valid and welcome. The management style someone chooses must match his or her personality. If someone is strong-willed and fully understands what is best for the company, then a more autocratic style is effective. If the manager is more concerned with an entire team effort or knows that he or she has limitations, then a more democratic approach is preferable.
